Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines – a heavily restored globular storage jar. 'Heavily restored' is definitely an understatement. If you take a close look at the model, you'll see that the pot sherds form a complete rim, but after that, we can't be certain what's original and what's restoration work. That's because the restorer has spray-painted his/her efforts grey and added some zig-zag decoration for good measure. It's hard to ignore the damage. Before we become too harsh in our judgment, we must remember that back in the late 1970s, the digital revolution was still on the horizon. There wasn't Sketchfab to bring the ancient past to life, no internet existed, and computers were confined to university and government research laboratory basements. Maybe we should view this object as a genuine attempt by someone living in the past to visualize the ancient past. Our globular jat stands 195mm high, with a maximum diameter of 186mm and a 65mm foot diameter.
