Sometimes believed to embody Adonis, "Resting Hunter" was one of several statues initially part of a collection showcasing the thrill of the hunt, alongside "Nymph with a Quiver" and "Nymph with a Dove," placed at the Horse pond near the river in Marly's park. Originally commissioned in 1707 and dated 1710, this group was relocated to the Tuileries gardens in 1716.
