Humans breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide through their lungs. The process starts when air enters the nose, where it warms up and humidifies before traveling down to the throat. There, it passes through the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound when we speak or make noise. As the air moves into the trachea, a tube that connects the throat to the lungs, it divides into two bronchi. One bronchus leads to each lung and further splits into smaller tubes called bronchioles. The bronchioles eventually lead to tiny air sacs known as alveoli, where oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is removed.
