Resonite Wall Sign
thingiverse
I was really impressed by the Resonite logo's design and decided to create a large version of it to hang on my wall using Home Assistant with WLED for control. Please ignore my mess of wiring. The sign incorporates approximately 193 WS2818B LEDs (depending on the base size), and I used the ones available here: Amazon link.To get started, you'll need to download WLED and acquire either an ESP8266 or ESP32, which you can find here: ESP8266/ESP32 on Amazon.Additionally, you'll require a sheet of Lauan, which you can find at places like Lowes, Home Depot, or a wood supply store, along with a can of black gloss spray paint and possibly some sandpaper. Here's a breakdown of the process:Begin by cutting a piece of wood with a laser cutter to dimensions of 475x475mm, and then engrave the locations for the 3D printed parts. The laser cutter can create markings for gluing the 3D printed parts even after painting. You could also make this backing by just cutting it with a saw.Lightly sand the Lauan with 200 and 400 grit sandpaper, followed by applying four coats of paint, finishing with a gloss coat.3D print the extrusions for the LEDs, including two large ones and four small ones, as well as the base. There are two base sizes, one designed for the LED power supply location. Keep in mind that 193 LEDs at full 5V power draw around 11 amps. You may need a step-down converter and a laptop power supply, like I used. The remainder of the process involves placing and wiring the LEDs. You'll need to cut holes for the wires to pass through. Connect 5V to 5V and ground to ground, and the LEDs will loop to the next part of the strip. The larger sections of the sign have overlapping LEDs.Note that it's crucial to maintain the same LED direction for each section of the sign. I made this mistake, and when using a rainbow pattern, it won't look right.Afterward, glue the base to the back and mount the sign on the wall. I've also included the WLED config file with some presets. I set the back LEDs, which light up the wall, as their own sub-strip.Finally, have fun programming and experimenting with various patterns. WLED is an outstanding open-source project. If you encounter any issues, feel free to message me on Discord (kalibirb or the Resonite Discord). I also plan on adding a bead of Black Silicone around the mating place of the 3D printed parts and wood, as the super glue had caused some discolorations and it will also enhance the appearance.Enjoy your project and happy VRing!
