Resize your spool with a simple ring and some sweat.

Sometimes your hardware doesn't work with your spools because they are too width. With this thing you can make a new center ring to create a smaller (narrower) spool. It will cost you some sweat since you have to cut the spool in 3 or 2 pieces.

Cutting:

If the spool is narrower then wanted, you can cut the inner-ring in half. If it is wider, you have to cut it in three pieces. Leave a piece of about 2 cm on both sides of the spool. It doesn't have to be precise, it is not a piano :). An (old) wood saw is perfect for cutting. Clean the two pieces afterwards.

The ring:

You can create your own ring with Openscad or derivative*. Measure the diameter of the inner ring and add some tolerance (0.4 mm or so). Insert the other paramaters. 1.6 mm thickness is enough for a solid result. Mitered edges are recommended. The inlets are there to create a more smooth transition of the filament at the start of rewinding the spool.

Attaching the ring with the two sides is best with a very tight fit. You may have to use some force. The two sides must be immovable. The spools are most of the time cheaply made, so a tight fit on one spool can be sloppy on another spool of the same brand. A ring of cheap tape around the two sides will solve that problem. Or use glue.

Drill 2mm holes at the ends of the inlets more or less in the direction the filament will be wound. In one of them you can secure the filament when you start the rewinding. Also doesn't have to be precise.

Happy spooling :)

---

*Openscad:

You can download the free and opensource OpenSCAD here: http://www.openscad.org

Instructions how the customizer works by Dr Lex: https://www.dr-lex.be/3d-printing/customizer.html

More information about the fantastic and challenging program OpenSCAD can be found here: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual

If you don't want to install Openscad, you can use an in-browser version: https://openscad.cloud/openscad/ or https://ochafik.com/openscad/
Open the scad-file in Notepad and copy-paste the text in the browser.
