The first universal joint application was in ancient China over 2,000 years ago with the invention of gimbals. These interlocking rings allowed a candle to remain upright in any position. In 1545, Girolamo Cardano theorized using gimbals for transmitting rotary motion, leading to the development of the Cardan Shaft in 1548. Robert Hooke improved upon this idea in 1676, creating a joint allowing twisting motion transfer between shafts regardless of orientation. Clarence W. Spicer patented and manufactured universal joints for automotive industries in 1903-1904.
