The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, famed as WWII's eminent aircraft from Republic, first flew on 6th May 1941. It was designed as a high-performance fighter/bomber with large Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine for enhanced performance and load-carrying capacity. Delivered to the US Army Air Corps in June 1942, it served in the European Theater. Later, Jugs were escort fighters for B-29 bombers in the Pacific but excelled primarily in ground attack roles across European battlefields. Early versions had razorback fuselages, while later models (from mid-production) featured bubble canopies for increased rearward visibility.
