The P-47 Thunderbolt, one of WWII's largest single-engine fighters, was primarily used as a bomber escort in Europe but faced range limitations. Following the introduction of long-range P-51-D Mustangs, the P-47 was reassigned for ground attack and troop support duties. Known for their durability, maneuverability, and speed, P-47s saw action in Europe, the Pacific, and Asia. After WWII, many were scrapped or transferred to other air forces; the last P-47 retired in the mid-1970s. Today, few complete flight-worthy models remain.
