Initially used as a bomber escort plane in Europe, it later took on ground attack and allied troop support missions after long-range P-51-D Mustangs arrived. Following WWII, P-47s were either destroyed or transferred to other air forces worldwide. The last remaining operational P-47 was retired in the mid-1970s, with few complete and flight-worthy models existing today.
