The P-47 Thunderbolt, one of WWII's largest single-engine fighters, primarily served as a bomber escort plane in Europe; however, its limited range prevented it from escorting the entire way to targets and back. Upon introduction of the long-range P-51-D Mustangs, the P-47 was reassigned for ground attack missions and support of allied troops. Durable, maneuverable, and fast, these aircraft were deployed across Europe, Pacific, and Asian fronts during WWII. Postwar, most P-47s ended up in desert salvage yards, destroyed in Europe or transferred to European, Central, and South American allies' air forces. The last operational P-47 was retired in the mid-1970s, with only a few remaining complete and flyable today.
