The P-47 Thunderbolt, one of WWII's largest single-engine fighters, served as a bomber escort plane until the arrival of the long-range P-51-D Mustangs. Subsequently, the P-47 was reassigned for ground attack and allied troop support missions due to its speed, maneuverability, and toughness. After WWII, many P-47s were sent to desert salvage yards, destroyed in Europe, or transferred to other European, Central, and South American air forces. The last P-47 was retired from active service in the mid-1970s, with very few complete, flight-worthy models remaining today.
