The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a renowned WWII aircraft, was first flown on May 6, 1941. Designed as a large fighter/bomber with a powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, it provided exceptional performance and load-carrying capacity. Deliveries began in June 1942 for the US Army Air Corps' European Theater operations. Later, P-47s served as Pacific escort fighters for B-29 bombers, but primarily excelled in ground-attack roles across European battlefields. Models featured 'razorback' fuselages initially, while later versions boasted bubble canopies offering enhanced rearward visibility for pilots.
