The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a renowned WWII aircraft, first flew on May 6, 1941. Designed as a high-performance fighter/bomber with the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, it offered exceptional performance and load-carrying capacity. First deliveries were made in June 1942 to the US Army Air Corps for use in Europe. Later, P-47s functioned as escort fighters for B-29 bombers in the Pacific but excelled primarily in ground attack roles during European battles. Early models featured 'razorback' fuselages, while later versions (from mid-production) had bubble canopies for improved rearward visibility.
