The Thunderbolt was WWII's most renowned Republic aircraft. First flown on May 6, 1941, this large, high-performance fighter/bomber was powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine for exceptional performance and load-carrying capacity. Deliveries began in June 1942 to the US Army Air Corps, who used it in Europe. Later, Jugs supported B-29 bombers in the Pacific, but primarily excelled as ground attackers in Europe. Models later featured bubble canopies for improved rear visibility.
