The Thunderbolt, a renowned Republic aircraft in WWII, was first flown on May 6, 1941. Designed as a high-performance fighter/bomber with the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine for exceptional performance and load-carrying capability, it had its initial deliveries in June 1942, serving the US Army Air Corps in Europe. As escort fighters for B-29 bombers in the Pacific later in the war, Thunderbolts particularly excelled in ground attack roles, strafing and bombing across European battlefields. The aircraft featured 'razorback' fuselages initially but transitioned to bubble canopies on later models, providing enhanced rearward visibility for pilots.
