Howard's fiction. First appearance of serpent men in literature was in Weird Tales, August 1929, The Shadow Kingdom by Howard. This story drew on lost worlds like Atlantis and Lemuria from Theosophical ideas, particularly Helena Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine written in 1888 with 'dragon-men' on a Lemurian continent.[8] Howard's serpent men were described as humanoids (with human bodies and snake heads) who imitated humans at will, living underground and using shapechanging, mind-control abilities to infiltrate humanity.[9] Clark Ashton Smith used Howard's themes and serpent men in his stories, blending them with H. P. Lovecraft ideas, creating the Cthulhu Mythos basis with Howard and Lovecraft.[10] In the 1940s, Maurice Doreal wrote Mysteries of the Gobi pamphlet describing a serpent race with man bodies but great snake heads and human-form-taking abilities.[12] These creatures appeared in Doreal's poem The Emerald Tablets referencing Emerald Tablets written by Thoth, an Atlantean Priest king. Barkun asserts that likely, Doreal got his ideas from The Shadow Kingdom; its basis formed Children of the Matrix book by David Icke.[13]
