New Version 3 of my spool holder is now available! The updated design allows for faster printing and improved handling of multiple spools. Previously, I faced issues when swapping spools on my Rep2 and Creator X due to varying spool sizes offered by Makerware and Flash Forge. To resolve this, I designed a new spool holder that fits both units and accommodates various spool sizes. To create the holder, I bought a 4ft aluminum tubing and a 10mm thick crossbar from Home Depot. I cut the tubing into two 18" pieces and used Tinkercad to design the "seats" and bar end caps. The end caps hold the crossbar securely in place, allowing easy loading and unloading of different-sized spools. To maintain low rolling resistance, I incorporated 10mm inner diameter hubs for each spool size into the design. These hubs fit onto 30mm outer diameter bearings, which are glued to the crossbar using a single drop of Krazy Glue. The bearings enable smooth spinning and reduce strain on the printer's feeder mechanism. The holder can accommodate up to five different spool sizes simultaneously, making it easier to swap filament colors or types. It also allows for direct routing of filament into the extruder(s), eliminating the need for tubes if desired. The new location does not interfere with existing spool mount locations and is removable for easy transportation. To use this improved spool holder, simply purchase the listed parts from the description, print the STL file, and assemble it according to the instructions provided.
