Replicator 2/2X hinges and handle for the lid
thingiverse
For the price of a Replicator 2X, one might expect an included hinge for its vacuum-formed lid. However, here's a deluxe and overengineered version with ball bearing hinges that provide support when open. While printed hinge bearings would suffice, they won't be as "nice." Design files in rhino3D and STEP formats are available for those who wish to customize. This upgrade works like a bought one and is sure to please. Instructions include STLs for the lower machine clip (Hinge A), upper hinge (Hinge B), and handle, along with a separate pivot STL for strength. PLA with 100% infill is recommended for the pivot, while Hinges A/B and handle can be printed in any material. The handle features plates for attaching to the other side of the lid, ensuring a secure fit without tearing or distortion. Ball bearings (22mm OD, 8mm ID, 7mm depth) from roller blades are used for smooth movement and can be easily obtained. Upper Hinge B supports the lid when open without issue and fits snugly during motion. Double-sided tape is used to bond the upper hinge to the lid, preventing side-to-side movement during lid flipping. An alternative magnet solution was considered for securing Hinge A to the machine's upper surface but was deemed less preferable due to its additional complexity and potential rattle. An update addressed STL loading issues in other programs, providing refreshed STLs that check out clean in Netfabb. Another update offered a slimmer Hinge A for those experiencing print head collisions. Despite these enhancements, no printing problems have been reported.
