Acheulean Hand Axe Originates from France Location: Southwestern part of the country. Timeframe: Early-Middle Paleolithic era (before 300,000-100,000 years ago). Made of Flint Material Dimensions Vary Important Information Catalog Number: 1966a1 identifies this specific specimen as number three in a collection. In total, sixteen Paleolithic chipped-stone tools were replicated by Abbe Henri Breuil around 1929 at the Institute of Human Paleontology in Paris, France. This particular tool is part of a larger collection of artifacts acquired by James Bell Bullitt during his European tour in 1929. The collection was later donated to the University of North Carolina. Today, it resides within the North Carolina Archaeological Collection at the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
