Replacing chess pieces (more tutorial than just stls, and this works for anything mostly rotationally symmetrical)
thingiverse
To recreate lost chess pieces, first take a horizontal photo of the desired piece from far away using a camera. Inkscape is then employed to align the image and trace its outline as straight lines, which are exported to DXF format. OpenSCAD converts the 2D DXF file to a 3D model: rotate_extrude($fn=100) import("/home/james/bishop.dxf"); Adjustments can be made, such as subtracting cutout parts or scaling the object to the correct size. Finally, export to STL and print the replacement piece. The author was pleasantly surprised by the method's effectiveness.
