Replacement Subaru Gas Cap Lanyard / Tether

Replacement Subaru Gas Cap Lanyard / Tether

We recently had a problem with our Subaru's gas cap lanyard/tether breaking. It happened shortly after we purchased the car, and while it wasn't a major issue, it was certainly frustrating. To make matters worse, you can only buy the entire gas cap and lanyard assembly from the dealership. Not satisfied with this option, my wife and I decided to create our own replacement gas cap lanyard. We 3D printed it using polyurethane, which turned out to be both stronger and more flexible than the original. This new lanyard has been successfully installed on various Subaru models, including the 2004-2012 Impreza, WRX, STI, Forester, Outback, and Tribeca. Installation is relatively simple, but you will need to reuse the existing pin on the gas flap door. If you don't want to print your own lanyard, I also offer them for sale on my website: https://www.makerneer.com/product-page/replacement-subaru-gas-cap-lanyard. If you have any questions about the improvements we made to the original design or TPU's chemical resistance, you're in luck. These topics are covered in detail on my blog post at https://www.makerneer.com/single-post/2017/08/05/Gas-cap-lanyard---Improvements-and-testing.
