A neighbor across town experienced an unfortunate setback with his outboard motor. He had broken a critical component and needed to find a suitable replacement. The broken part resembled the deadman's switch assembly, also known as the lanyard clip. Unable to locate an identical part, he began to investigate alternatives. A friend who possesses expertise in digital fabrication took on the challenge. To produce the missing component, the first step involved gathering precise measurements using a set of calipers. A computer-aided design (CAD) model was subsequently created based on those readings. To print the new part without the use of additional support material, slight adjustments were necessary. Once satisfied with the CAD design, it was sent to a 3D printer for fabrication. The process from start to finish took approximately 15 minutes, during which time the motor assembly remained secure in a designated holding device.
