The debut of the 4L van parallels closely that of the sedan's. Although introduced discreetly as a utility model in October 1961 at the Paris Motor Show, the 4L was already available in various forms: R3, R4 and the utility version itself. It enters competition with the venerable 2CV utility to supplant the aging JuvaQuatre break. Shaped by its sedan sibling, it features a common front assembly: matching engines, bodywork, and finish levels comparable to those of the R3 or R4 models. Yet passenger seating, while optional on the van, diverges in its design from that of the more elegant R3 rendition, which seemed content with being merely an exhibit model. Inside, in place of traditional door frames, a utility compartment now offers ample storage and a full vertical side entrance facilitating effortless access to tools and cargo. Note that, for practical purposes or customer preferences, hinges enable reversible installation ensuring easy loading whether from the right or left side. A convenient roof opening above the passenger door called "giraffe" option allows users additional flexibility. Engineers reinforced torsion bars as well as enlarged the tire (to 145) thus increasing cargo carrying capacity to an impressive 300 kg for optimal productivity. Later, in 1964, Renault released a special edition version with large side windows offering improved visibility, a backseat and collapsible front chairs allowing passengers more space. Subsequent improvements enabled even heavier loads – up to 350 kilograms by 1966
