The Renault 4L - also known simply as R4 - remains a popular economy car built by Renault between the years 1961 and 1992. As one of Renault's front-wheel drive family cars, it was produced on a massive scale and met the growing demand for automobiles in France where its success propelled Renault into international prominence with more than eight million units ultimately manufactured after it had achieved sales exceeding a million units before the close of 1966, only four years from its first roll-out to the market at that time when an era marked by prolonged economic decline finally gave way to improved prosperity and booming car sales throughout the nation. Notably roomy in spite of being modest in size and despite originally classified as a compact station wagon when introduced to the market it is now recognized as one of the earliest models produced to be fitted with the revolutionary design configuration for a hatchback.
