The Renault 4, famously referred to as the 4L and R4, was manufactured by French automaker Renault from 1961 to 1992. This compact car marked a milestone as it became the initial front-wheel drive family vehicle produced by Renault. Its production coincided with France's transition from economic stagnation to flourishing prosperity and soaring car ownership rates. Within merely four and a half years, one million of these vehicles were manufactured; by the time production ceased, over eight million units had been built. The Renault 4 was an unqualified success due to its timely launch and exceptional design. Notably spacious for its size, it was initially viewed as a small estate car but is now recognized as the first hatchback family vehicle.
