Kidney Cancer Strikes Adults with Alarming Frequency Renal cell carcinoma takes its toll on adults, accounting for a staggering 85% of all cancers originating from the kidney. The root cause of renal cell carcinoma lies in the proximal renal tubular epithelium, where abnormal growth begins to take hold. This form of cancer appears in two distinct forms: sporadic and hereditary. Both types are linked to genetic mutations on chromosome 3's short arm (3p). Scientists studying families prone to developing kidney cancer discovered genes responsible for tumor formation. These genes either suppress tumor growth or fuel its progression, with VHL, TSC, and MET being prime examples of the former.
