Large format Renaissance polychrome stove tiles discovered during excavations in the Rossgarten quarter of Königsberg are now held by Baltspetsarkheologia after being unearthed in 2017-18. Depicted on these tiles are vivid representations of Albrecht Dürer's engravings from his celebrated series "Small Passions," which was first published in 1511. This epic narrative, spanning the martyrdom and atoning death of Christ alongside Old Testament scenes, consisted of a total of 36 woodcuts and a cover page. Here, on the stove tiles, we find illustrations from the initial sheet of the series, "The Fall of Man," followed by the second sheet, "Adam and Eve Expelled from Eden," then the third sheet, "The Annunciation," and finally the fourth sheet, "The Nativity (the Adoration of the Shepherds)." Notably, the proportions of the original engravings were altered to accommodate the size of the tiles.
