Removable Print Head X Axis Assembly for Orcabot 040
thingiverse
This is a refined version of an X axis removable print head I have designed for my Orcabot 040 (a reliable workhorse made by Mendel Parts). UPDATE 2020: I have modified the top to allow for the brass nylon sleeve retainers to be printed out, which enables you to screw the brass thread into the printed top, giving an extra hold as it is recessed. The updated files are now included. NOTE: This design is a work in progress and the files (.stl) provided are improved versions of the photos/design screen shots. WHY: I wanted to be able to swap entire print heads between PLA and ABS and revive my old printer to operational status. After looking around, I saw several ideas but none that would bolt on, so I created my own version with a large locking lever for the swappable print head retaining platform. The design is intended to provide space for a bed level sensor under the main assembly and house a small PCB (with connector) to interface/connect between the different print heads. This release has better zip-tie access holes and design improvements to the first print along with several other tweaks noticed in the print. I have increased the stepper motor mount x width after having an integrity issue after clearing the support material out of the last print from this area (the difference is seen in the exploded view of all parts and the individual TOPSIDE .stl file). Future improvements will be to add a print cooling fan on the underside piece, below the release lever. My objective was to keep the design minimal in width to maintain as much x travel as possible while retaining strength on the platform. I recommend this design for the idler: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2422237
