From 1381 to 1385, Santa Fiora's history took a dramatic turn as the Republic of Siena conquered this medieval state ruled by Counts Aldobrandeschi, transforming it into a strategic military hub at Monte Amiata. The Siennese government responded with an ambitious construction project to fortify and expand the former Aldobrandeschi fortress. Their initial move was to enlarge the defensive moat that encircled the citadel wall on both the south and east sides, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the preserved structures of the surveyed area. Meanwhile, they built a fortified entrance, known as an antiport, which served as the main gateway to the fortress through a drawbridge crossing the moat. Faro Scans 36, Images 1507 Michele Nucciotti penned the insightful work "Note sulla politica urbanistica del governo senese di Santa Fiora (1381-1385)" in 1998, which was later followed by his collaboration with Guido Vannini on "Santa Fiora: strutture materiali di una capitale rurale nella Toscana meridionale del Medioevo" published in Siena in 2002.
