This is a modified Boots Industries filament spool holder design. As with the original version published on Thingiverse, it utilizes a single 608ZZ bearing but employs more 4mm hardware for secure clamping and fine-tuning of spool rotation. Various brands offer filaments with distinct spool diameters, making different removable adapter pieces necessary for each size in the BI design; however, this redesign accommodates multiple diameters in a singular spinner. Similar slicing parameters and PLA materials result in a base and platform weight of about 34g for the original BI model, matching that of the redesigned version which features a multi-diameter spinner. Each different spool hub hole diameter in the BI design necessitates one adapter piece at approximately 27g; in contrast, this revised system allows support for multiple diameters in a single fixed spinner with an equal weight to its counterpart. The base is designed with a 120mm diameter; alternative dimensions of 98mm can be obtained by modifying parameters and recompiling the design in openSCAD. A set of uploaded designs includes spinner settings suitable for reel hub hole diameters ranging from 2", 1.5", 1.25", to 0.75". Adjusting program parameters within openSCAD enables generation of diverse combinations. Important considerations apply regarding printer calibration and filament shrinkage, necessitating input of a scaling factor during slicing using MakerWare or other tools provided for the base STL files. Printed spool holders were created on MakerBot Replicator (dual) printers at TechShop San Carlos and San Jose, using PLA and ABS materials with successful results through the application of a 100.54% scaling factor. Users seeking to determine their needed scaling factor and the ideal fit for the bearing post may create and print a test piece (the base's center post) and adjust the scaling and/or openSCAD parameters as necessary to obtain a diameter of exactly 22mm for optimal results. Ideally, the bearing bore should possess a gentle hand-press fit and the central shaft threaded with the provided screw. Furthermore, a light hand press fit is desired for the bearing on the spinner outside. Given that a standard 30mm long screw accommodates this design best, a 35mm screw provides an added benefit during test fitting: easier removal of the spinner in cases of tight bearing-to-spinner fit. An assembled holder is showcased through the inclusion of images; following assembly, users should refer to step-by-step procedures illustrated. To start, insert the provided 4mm screws into their designated posts from beneath and then gently press the center post onto the post with a suitable washer, making sure to keep them evenly spaced for smooth functioning. Once complete, place and tighten washers in their respective areas, taking note that full tightening may not be needed immediately but will come into play during adjustment for desired drag.
