REMIX - Aliens FaceHugger Egg From Babelibue for Agisis' FaceHugger (Near Life Size)
thingiverse
UPDATE!!! I've uploaded the No Tendrils egg that includes a base, and it's a total game-changer! The base is necessary since it cuts through two layers of the model to create an internal support structure to build the lower bowl of the inside of the egg. Trust me, you want this! If you're looking for a 0% infill egg that lets you shine a light through without seeing those pesky infill lines, then this is the way to go! I'm keeping the normal support at the bottom as well, but it prints with ease on 0% infill. Printing fast with low retraction gives you strings inside, which add some internal support too - and they look awesome! Sorry for the weird size comparisons, but the body of the tape is 2", so it's a whopping 7.5" total! I filled and coated the egg in ABS/Acetone, and after another coat, it should be water- and chemically-resistant. The skin is nice and smooth, too, and it's still transparent with the 1mm shell - talk about a winner! Next up: filling and coating more ABS/Acetone, some paint and latex, then connecting the tendrils... and I'm done! One note on filling the egg: don't even think about drilling the points where the tendrils connect - the 1mm shell is too fragile! That didn't work out for me in the lower right corner of that green egg. I did use a small propane torch and an X-Acto knife to cut out and/or move the PLA around, though - it was a real lifesaver! The yellow slime part? Yeah, it's a really bad ABS brand from Shaxon - more like PVC than ABS! But hey, the effect worked perfectly, so I'm not complaining. ################################################## DO NOT let the CAD view fool you: this thing is HUGE!!! Full disclosure: those eggs in the movies were almost up to our hips. This egg fills the capacity of a TAZ 5 - if you want true life-size, you'll need a huge printer or segment it and weld/glue it together. Using a LULZBot TAZ 5? One tendril takes up almost the whole bed... SO I cut it up into 5 pieces. Have fun, and patience is a virtue when something cool is in store! If you use this thingi for your Face Hugger, print with light infill and shell - PLA has its uses! If you can make a nice paint job while keeping the translucency, you'll have a damn near real Face Hugger Egg. How to assemble it? Drill one or more large holes in each connection point, then add some epoxy, glue, caulk, or other adhesive that takes up a lot of volume - and creates a solid bond. A plastic welder will do wonders for post-seam adhesion and cleaning up any gaps! SO now I have some wicked props for my house when people walk in the front door!
