Reliquary triptych of the Holy Cross
thingiverse
Reliquary triptych of the Holy Cross. Crafted by a skilled Mosan workshop between 1220-1230, this exquisite work features a wooden core, intricately chiseled silver, repousse and gilded details, mixed enamels, delicate filigree, cabochons, niello, and rich brown varnishes. A dummy relic made of plaster adds authenticity to the piece. The triptych originated from the Abbey of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Saint-Maur de Florennes in Belgium. The cult of the Cross reached new heights in the Meuse region during the 12th century, fueled by the Crusades. Precious relics brought back from the East were often showcased in triptychs, a type of reliquary with shutters of Byzantine origin. Inside the double-traverse cross, the holy relic was carefully preserved and displayed to the faithful.
