Reliquary triptych of the Holy Cross, a masterpiece from the Mosan workshop, crafted between 1220 and 1230, showcases exceptional craftsmanship with intricate details of chiseled silver, repousse, gilded accents, mixed enamels, filigree, cabochons, niello, and brown varnishes. A dummy relic made of plaster is cleverly integrated to enhance the overall design. This stunning piece can be found at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire within the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels, Belgium. The Middle Ages saw a significant surge in the cult of the Cross, particularly in the Meuse region, following the influence of the Crusades in the 12th century. The precious relics brought back from the East were often preserved and displayed to the faithful in triptychs, a type of reliquary with shutters originating from Byzantium. The holy relic was once housed within the double traverse cross at the heart of this magnificent reliquary. For more fascinating updates, please consider following me on Twitter at @GeoffreyMarchal.
