Chan Chan (meaning "Shining Sun" in Quingnam) is a pre-Columbian adobe city built on Peru's northern coast by the Chimú people. As the largest adobe city in America and the second-largest globally, it stands northwest of Trujillo's metropolitan area between Trujillo and Huanchaco districts. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, Chan Chan also made its way onto the List of World Heritage in Danger that same year. This impressive complex comprises nine walled cities or small fortified towns, serving as the capital of the Chimor kingdom, an organized state of the Chimú culture.
