Relief Offers a Glimpse of History Measuring 41.9 cm in height and 106 cm in width, this relief is an impressive piece of art created from wood with paint. The year it was made is 1724. In the center of the relief, you see a beautifully crafted depiction of a barge with a complex mast and anchor on its bow. Two rowers and a helmsman are shown standing on the deck. This entire scene is framed by an oval wreath of leaves and accompanied by two coats of arms. These coats of arms feature three-way divided crosses with flags and dates "1724". Until 2017, this relief was exhibited as part of the permanent exhibition at the Crane in Gdansk. It originally came from the Church of St. John in Gdansk, which was built in the 14th century but burned down in 1945 and remained in ruins until 1989. In 1995, the building was handed over to the Pomeranian Centre for Culture, who oversee its reconstruction, conservation, and interior restoration. The relief is part of a sailor's lodge (located above the entrance to the lodge) that was reinstalled in St. John's Church after being preserved for 70 years and earlier conservation work.
