Human beings have long employed relief sculpture techniques to craft three-dimensional artworks that appear to rise above a solid background of matching material. This technique draws its name from the Latin verb relevo, meaning "to raise." By creating sculptures in relief, artists give the impression that sculpted elements have been elevated above the surrounding plane, when in reality they have merely been lowered from a flat surface of stone or wood. When chiseling away at the background to create a relief sculpture, significant amounts of time are consumed by this laborious process. However, relief sculptures offer several advantages over their freestanding counterparts. They require less material and are consequently more stable, as well as less prone to damage from environmental factors. Additionally, monumental bronze reliefs can be crafted through the process of casting, allowing artists to create intricate and complex designs with relative ease.
