Chrysapha/Sparta (Greece), acquired from the Sabouroff Collection; marble, approximately 540 BC. This monument is the oldest Laconian hero relief. It shows a deceased hero with distinct attributes of their exalted status: a throne, snake, receptacle for offerings, and worshippers. The tumuli of Spartan heroes are also believed to be crowned by reliefs of this type according to inscriptions.
