This relief showcases Goddess Maheshwar, Shiva's wife and the revered deity of Dumal community in Western Orissa. A formidable demon named Durgam seized all four Vedas from Brahma after winning his favor. In exchange for his loyalty, Brahma granted a promise that no one could vanquish him in battle. Eager to test this vow, Durgam began terrorizing monarchs and sages alike. As a result of this injustice, drought ravaged the land for one hundred years, leaving people on the brink of starvation. The deities sought out Maheshwari (Parvati) for help, recounting their plight in vivid detail. Moved to tears by these heart-wrenching accounts, Maheshwar wept uncontrollably for nine days and nights. Her sorrow transformed into a river, instantly ending the drought.
