Relief Slabs

Found in Rigillis Street, Athens, lies a trio of slabs adorned with vibrant Dionysiac motifs that once formed the stunning backdrop of an ancient altar. Slab number 3497 bears a majestic depiction of a panther, a revered and symbolic creature sacred to Dionysos, while slab number 3496 showcases the god himself at its center, proudly holding aloft a thyrsos and a gleaming bowl. Standing by his side is a nude wine-pourer, ready to serve the festivities. Flanking Dionysos are two winged Nike figures, gracefully leading sacrificial bulls towards a triumphant victory sacrifice, likely held in celebration of a dramatic contest. On slab number 3498, a lively scene unfolds as Silenoi and Satyrs engage in the art of winemaking: two treading grapes in wine-presses at either side, while their comrades carry a calyx krater overflowing with the juice of the ripest grapes.
