Relief slab figuring the contest between Apollo and Marsyas

myminifactory

This pedestal slab was unearthed in Mantineia, Arkadia. It accompanied three other slabs to form a protective wall around a statue base honoring the Delian trio - Leto, Apollo and Artemis - or perhaps an altar. The scene on this pedestal slab showcases the musical duel between Apollo and Marsyas. Apollo sits atop a rocky outcropping cradling his kithara, while Marsyas stands off to his right blowing into a flute. Between them stands a Scythian warrior who will exact a gruesome punishment upon Marsyas after he suffers defeat in their competition.
