Joseph Mayer's Portrait Relief Captures English Goldsmith and Collector Born to Samuel Mayer, a tanner and currier, Joseph Mayer made his mark as an English goldsmith, antiquary, and collector. At 20, he set up shop in Liverpool as a jeweller and goldsmith, thriving in business and indulging his passion for collecting. By 1860, Mayer's dedication to the volunteer movement earned him captain of the Liverpool borough guard. He invested time and money into raising a corps of volunteers at Bebington near Birkenhead, Cheshire, where he relocated in 1860. After retiring from business in 1873, Mayer passed away at Pennant House, Bebington, Cheshire on January 19, 1886, aged 82. His private library, prints, and manuscripts were sold off through auction in 1867. This portrait relief is a replica of the Fontana's bust portrait of Mayer (No. 7599), which also resides in the same collection.
