Relief is an innovative technique where sculpted elements remain firmly attached to a solid foundation of the same material. Derived from the Latin verb relevo, to lift, the term relief creates the illusion that the sculpted material has been elevated above the background plane. When creating a sculpture in relief, the impression is given that the sculpted material has been lifted upwards from the background surface. To craft a relief sculpture from a flat stone or wood surface involves a clever trick: lowering the field by chiseling away the background, leaving the unsculpted parts appearing raised. This technique requires significant chiseling away of the background, which can be a time-consuming process. On the other hand, a relief offers several advantages over sculptures in the round. It saves forming the rear of a subject and is less fragile, more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one featuring standing figures where weak points like ankles are prone to damage. In materials like metal, clay, plaster stucco, ceramics or papier-mâché, the form can be simply added to or raised up from the background. Even monumental bronze reliefs can be created through casting, showcasing the versatility of relief techniques in various mediums.
