Relief of a Murmillo Gladiator at The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg
myminifactory
The murmillo was a distinctive type of gladiator that emerged during the Roman Imperial era. Adopted early in the Imperial period, this class of warrior replaced the earlier Gallus-class gladiator, named after the skilled warriors of Gaul. As the Gauls had become fully integrated into Roman society by the time Augustus took power, it became impractical to depict them as foreign adversaries; hence, the Gallus-class gladiator was phased out. This tombstone relief features a murmillo gladiator, easily identifiable by the unique helmet adorned with an image of a fish. The surrounding Greek inscriptions may commemorate the death of a gladiator or serve as a tribute to their bravery.
