Relief - Mass deportation

The Assyrians swiftly relocated inhabitants from conquered enemy cities throughout their vast empire to fuel its explosive growth. Ensuring a safe and healthy arrival was paramount, with utmost care taken to prevent any unnecessary harm. On this wall panel, families are seen traveling under close guard, some on animals and carts, bound for new lives. Historical records reveal that some deportees were generously provided with sustenance, footwear, and attire, while others endured grueling journeys on meager rations. War captives, particularly women and children, were distributed among Assyrian troops and sold into bondage. This image originates from the North Palace in Nineveh, Iraq. It was scanned at the I Am Ashurbapinal exhibition at The British Museum in 2019.
