Relief: Madonna and Child

Andrea della Robbia's nephew and apprentice, Andrea, developed the renowned blue and white glazes used on terracotta sculpture, a hallmark of the della Robbia family's craftsmanship. By around 1470-75, when he crafted the Lehman Madonna, Andrea had been largely in charge of his family's shop on Florence's via Guelfa for several years. Though he remained loyal to his uncle Luca's style, Andrea's own artistic personality began to shine through in works like this one, featuring an exceptionally high relief that achieved grandeur without sacrificing any of the tender charm and harmony of expression that makes Luca so revered.
