Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachov was a renowned Russian Medievalist, Linguist, and concentration camp survivor. Born on 28 November 1906 in St. Petersburg, he spent his life studying the Old Russian language and its literature, earning him recognition as the world's leading expert. As an esteemed scholar, Likhachov was revered for his role as a guardian of national culture and as Russia's conscience due to his outspoken stance against Soviet rule. A relief sculpture is created by chiseling away at a flat surface, leaving the sculpted elements appearing raised above the background plane. This technique requires significant skill and patience, as it involves considerable work in removing the background material. In contrast, relief sculptures are less fragile than three-dimensional works of art, making them more securely fixed to their surroundings. There are different degrees of relief, ranging from high relief, where more than 50% of the depth is visible, to low relief, where the sculpted elements barely project above the field. The distinction between high and low relief is most significant, with these two terms being used to describe most works in this technique.
