Relief for a Heroized Physician

Relief for a Heroized Physician

myminifactory

Acquired in 1841 from Grimani collection, Venice Marble, circa 50 BC - 50 AD. The master sculptor skillfully combined motifs taken from ancient grave reliefs and votive offerings with those from hero reliefs in a bold, unorthodox manner. This remarkable relief honors a physician deified by his community and was likely displayed within the precinct of his tomb, which also served as a heroon - a site dedicated to the worship of heroes. This object is part of "Scan The World," a groundbreaking non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory.
