Relief depicting Perseus and Andromeda

This marble sculpture portrays the moment when Andromeda is rescued by Perseus, recognizable through the lifeless body of Cetus sprawled out beneath her and Perseus grasping the severed head of Medusa.\r\nIn ancient Greek mythology, Andromeda, the daughter of King Cepheus, faces death at the hands of Poseidon after her father boasts that she surpasses the Nereids in beauty. Bound to a rocky outcropping and left to perish by the sea monster, Perseus saves her by slaying it with Medusa's severed head.\r\nA well-known Roman mural from Pompeii (view attached image in thumbnail) depicts a similar aspect of the story as seen in this sculpture.
