Relicario de Santa Cecilia

Relicario de Santa Cecilia

Representation of a sculptural bust of Saint Cecilia appears as a beautiful young woman with blonde curly hair styled in an updo. She is dressed in a pink tunic embroidered with floral motifs and wears a headband covering her head. A bleeding wound on her neck alludes to her martyrdom; she was beheaded during the Roman persecution era. Her left hand rests on a small organ, which is her primary iconographic attribute; it refers to an episode from her wedding day, when an organ played in the background and she sang inwardly so that God would allow her to remain a virgin forever. Due to its stylistic characteristics (elongation of the figure, lack of expression, folds of clothing, treatment of small curls...) and the type of moldings that configure the reliquary, it can be considered a representative piece of Seville's mannerism from the last quarter of the 16th century.
