Directly powering the heatsink from the ramps board's mosfet can draw too much current and risk overheating it. Using this method provides a safer and faster way to warm up the heated bed. I control my heated bed with a 16A 12V relay because excessive amperage could damage my ramps card. This modification works significantly better and protects my ramps board while also heating up faster.
